HE'S ferried sports stars, TV personalities and City whizzkids through London's congested streets on the back of his bike – and he will be doing the same in Canterbury.
Rob Hutchings has just won permission to run the district's first bike taxi.
And the 40-year-old hopes to be available for hire this week.
The powerful Honda Pan-European bike could be just the answer for anyone needing to get around in a hurry.
It is fitted with a back rest and has space for luggage. The passenger sits behind the rider and is given a helmet with an intercom, gloves and a jacket plus waterproof trousers and a blanket if needed.
Mr. Hutchings has been riding motorbikes since he was 18 and has worked as a motorcycle private hire driver in London for four years. |
“I'm absolutely delighted to have got the license and I just need to wait to get the paperwork sorted out before I can start,” he said.
“When I did it in London, I found the City boys used it to get to the airport quickly, and took the odd Premiership footballer and even Ant and Dec.
Waste time
“One day I had to take Cat Deeley between studios she was filming programmes at. These people were drawn to it because you can waste so much time sitting in traffic. I'm going to target the whole of Kent and then I'll see how it goes before I start hiring any more riders.”
Mr. Hutchings was awarded a private hire operator's license by the city council's general purposes committee.
He operates like a minicab to pre-arranged bookings. |
